The Walk for Life Foundation and Fundación “La Caixa” have come together to reduce the impact of hair loss as a result of cancer treatments.

Hair loss is one of the most frequent side effects of cancer treatments. Therapies often damage the hair follicle which causes the hair to fall out. This aesthetic change can significantly impact the psychological health and emotional state of the patient, as well as causing hypersensitivity in the affected area due precisely to the loss of hair.

For the last 16 years the Walk for Life Foundation has been creating activities and projects designed to improve the quality of life of those suffering from breast cancer, through financial assistance, funding research, and practical assistance, information, training and therapy.

Fundación “La Caixa” through CaixaBank have now donated funds to the Walk for Life to launch the ‘Scarves for Life’. Always aware of the needs of the women who visit the Pink Room, the HQ for the foundation, and with first hand sensitivity as to how the loss of hair can affect cancer patients, the Walk for Life has established a commercial partnership with a company that specialises in the making of scarves, hats, and turbans for oncology patients.

The design and materials used in the making of the products is adapted to the different needs of the patient undergoing oncology treatments who can choose between a variety of fabrics, heavier or lighter in weight to match their skin sensitivity, and pick headwear for different seasons of the year – scarves that include protection from the sun for spring and summer, hats and scarves that will protect from the cold and the rain in autumn and winter. The shapes, designs and colours ensure that these head coverings are more than simply a therapeutic aid; they are a welcome accessory that can improve self-esteem and image awareness during the process.

The Foundation has also worked to extend the project, with turbans, and scarves in children’s sizes, adapted for younger wearers in terms of style, designs and materials, hopefully making this part of the process a little bit easier as the young patient suffers hair loss.

The president of the Walk for Life foundation, Brigitte Gypen, said, “This donation from La Caixa Foundation allows us offer a scarf or turban to all those who need them, free of charge, improving not just their quality of life, but their appearance and frame of mind for whoever needs it.
